II Curso de ARQUITECTURA Y TEATRO de la ETSAV, UVA.

El objetivo del curso es continuar con la línea de investigación marcada en el curso precedente sobre las relaciones físicas, artísticas, técnicas y simbólicas entre Arquitectura y Teatro, un mundo al que muchos artistas y arquitectos han dedicado su actividad profesional. Para ello se programan conferencias e intervenciones con temáticas diversas sobre estas relaciones, dentro de las cuales se cuenta con participación internacional. También se incorporan talleres y mesa redonda para ofrecer una mayor variedad de actividades. Además, con el fin de incorporar el teatro dentro del centro, se programan tres sesiones de una representación de marionetas.

Las organizadoras, en primer lugar, queremos agradecer la participación desinteresada de todos aquellos que realizarán intervenciones, talleres y mesa redonda y, en segundo lugar, esperamos contar de nuevo con el interés por esta II Edición del curso de aquellos que asistieron el año pasado, con los que fue muy grato compartir los diferentes actos. También alentamos la incorporación de nuevos asistentes que deseen conocer las relaciones entre ambas actividades artístico-técnicas.

ABSTRACT: Along with professional specialized magazines, NO-DO (Newsreels and Documentary films) constituted another way of promoting architecture in Spain, aimed towards general public over a period of almost 40 years (1943-1981). In these state newsreels, compulsorily shown in cinemas all around the country, architecture appears mixed with other news of diverse nature. When dealing with architecture, housing is the most recurring topic; both the housing built in Spain, where new villages and urban districts emerge constantly, and the foreign housing, which the newsreel considers a symbol of modernity itself. The image of foreign housing that NO-DO newsreels transmit is heterogeneous and basically responds to four recurring types of news on the screens: Odd geometrical shapes (which are strange to the general public), new materials, new constructive techniques and installations, residential buildings set in peculiar locations or situations and exhibitions showing the progress in housing.

RESUMEN: Frente a las revistas profesionales dedicadas a la arquitectura, el NO-DO (Noticiarios y Documentales Cinematográficos) es otro vehículo de difusión de la misma destinado a la población en general durante casi 40 años en España (1943-1981). A través de estos noticiarios de estado, que se proyectan obligatoriamente en los cines de todo el territorio nacional, la arquitectura aparece mezclada con un sinfín de noticias variopintas. Dentro de la arquitectura, la vivienda tiene un tratamiento preferente, tanto la que se construye en el país, con el incesante surgimiento de nuevos pueblos y barrios urbanos, como la vivienda extranjera, que el noticiario considera emblema de lo moderno. La imagen de la vivienda extranjera que transmite el noticiario NO-DO es heterogénea y responde básicamente a cuatro tipos de noticias recurrentes en las pantallas: Las configuraciones geométricas más curiosas o extrañas para la población en general, los nuevos materiales, las nuevas técnicas constructivas e instalaciones, las construcciones residenciales en ubicaciones o situaciones especiales y las exposiciones que muestran los avances de la vivienda.

ABSTRACT: The Noticiario y Documentales Cinematográficos, known as NO-DO and made between 1943 and 1981, gathers social achievements during the dictatorship and transition to democracy in Spain. It allows us to study the cinematographic image of the different types of housing, both the isolated and the collective, vernacular and urban, anonymous and renowned architect’s housing. This architecture, which is mainly institutionally promoted, is registered in specific social and economic conditions.
Architectural contents and cinematographic narrative form used in the newsreel become an alternative format to make the housing politics and its image known to the general public. Therefore, it constitutes an example of the documentary of State and its sound and visual rhetoric. The evolution of residential housing and its audiovisual presentation can be analysed through the propaganda and informative character of the documentaries. Those images contribute to architectural knowledge, understood as the exploration of the image in movement.

III Encuentro / Workshop de ARQUITECTURA Y TEATRO de la ETSAVA, UVA.

El curso se ha consolidado compuesto por un Encuentro/Meeting y un Taller/ Workshop. En el primero diversos expertos exponen las relaciones entre Arquitectura y Teatro atendiendo a las distintas particularidades y vínculos de ambas disciplinas. Por su parte el Taller de investigación escénica, titulado "Arquitecturas para el cuerpo", tiene como objetivo elaborar una envolvente parcial para el cuerpo humano que represente una forma arquitectónica, parte de ella o un elemento constituyente reconocible que transforme la identidad del personaje-actor.

En paralelo, se viene realizando el Taller adaptado a la Enseñanza Secundaria, Bachillerato y Ciclos formativos dentro de la II Feria Espacios de Ingenio (PID coordinado por Gemma Ramón Cueto), que se celebrará en el Campus de la UVA el 31 de Marzo y 1 de Abril. Ya hemos realizado varios talleres y esperamos que todas estas actividades contribuyan a ampliar la visión que la sociedad, y los más jóvenes en particular, puedan tener de la Arquitectura, así como a apoyar y fomentar el interés por el Teatro.

ABSTRACT: Fiction films made in Spain between the 1940s and 1960s address the cinematographic image of the Spanish housing and allow us to study both the architectural environments recreated for cinema and the incorporation of filmed real environments.
Cinema provides the appearance of each particular project together with the possibility to experience it through the moving image. Because of this, cinema becomes an essential archive for the case study of architecture, since it completes the graphic documentation of the filmed architecture.
Architectural contents and cinematographic narrative forms used in these films make different characteristics of the residential architecture of this period known to the general public. In addition, it allows for the analysis of the different elements that compose houses: living spaces, furniture and domestic equipment, facilities, inhabitants, public spaces and the urban environment where these buildings are settled.
These film archives show different aspects of the social, cultural and politic life in those days, so they are a basic tool to find out the audiovisual history of Spain and its social changes as well as the development of new housing construction and the emergence of new urban districts.

IV Encuentro / Workshop de ARQUITECTURA Y TEATRO de la ETSAVA-ESDUVA. MARZO 2018. Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Universidad de Valladolid, España.
La nueva edición del curso mantiene la doble estructura de Encuentro/Meeting y Taller/ Workshop. Por un lado, diversos expertos exponen las relaciones entre Arquitectura y Teatro atendiendo a las distintas particularidades y vínculos de ambas disciplinas. Por otro, el Taller/Workshop de investigación escénica, titulado "Atmósferas de represión para Segismundo", tiene como objetivo elaborar un entorno virtual partiendo de la manipulación digital de uno real, destinado a acoger un monólogo del protagonista de La vida es sueño de Calderón de la Barca.

The urban domesticity is addressed through its representation in the Spanish fiction films; specifically, the research focuses on the private area of the human housing, commonly called “piso” (apartment), of the new neighbourhoods of blocks and towers built in the Spanish cities during the second half of the 20th century. The studied images recreate the houses intended for the emerging middle classes to satisfy the desires for a better life. They highlight their characteristics and the life that develops within these standard accommodations, since both dependencies which integrate them and the set offer a panoply of realities and expectations of society about the housing. These cinematographic fictions about residential buildings, reworked from the built ones, have shaped stereotypes in the collective imaginary whose influence reaches the present, conditioning our gaze and the ways of inhabiting the contemporary housing.

ABSTRACT: The newsreel of State used to show to Spanish society a determined image of architecture, conditioned by the political needs of Franco's Regime. In this case, the subject of the cinematographic image of villages of colonization of the Tagus valley as presented by the NO-DO newsreel (Noticiarios y Documentales Cinematográficos) is studied. NO-DO was originally created as a propaganda tool and an instrument for the diffusion of "specially relevant" news from that time period. The analysis of the architecture built by the National Institute of Colonization (INC) and showed in different editions of the newsreel allowed us to understand the ideological approach made by the Regime to the Spanish countryside, through the model of colonization of the territory, and how building was used as propaganda. The urban model proposed was defined by civic centres-usually square-shaped-, and church towers as urban milestones set in the landscape. For this reason, politic demonstrations in the representative public spaces of villages, through the delivering of houses and rural property to settlers, incorporated the context and living conditions in which new villages were built. At the same time, the visits to irrigation farms, new irrigation canals, and hydraulic and hydroelectric infrastructures exemplify the agrarian and irrigation policies during the autarchy, whereas in the next decades, and because of the economic and social development of the countryside, news about reservoirs were just referred to sports and leisure activities. Therefore, these cinematographic images of buildings, irrigation policies and the modernization of rural landscape presented in cinemas through the NO-DO newsreel are relevant, since they build a collective memory of the architecture and engineering of that time. They also document the social, politic and economic role that the creation of Spanish villages of colonization at river basins had, specifically in one of the biggest rivers, the Tagus.

ABSTRACT: The reply letter dating of April 1952 that Audibert, director of Pathé Jounal, addresses to Soriano, director of NO-DO, is the starting point of this research, in which the exchange of documentation collections between the two newsreels is analysed. From its beginnings, NO-DO intended to complete its archive with cinematographic recordings prior to the Spanish Civil War and to its own creation, on account of the historical value of them.
Newsreels provide an important tool to analyse how collective imaginary is shaped and how prevailing politics and culture affect the way to show buildings and cities are shown in the cinema screens. Contents studied of both Pathé and NO-DO are mainly official acts and visits, in which the filmed architecture creates the atmosphere and scenographic background for the politic and social action. Therefore, and respectively, buildings and urban spaces shown both for foreign public, through the social icons activity, and for domestic public, through the purposeful glance of the Francoist regime, might help provide a certain image of reality that covers the different stages of the 20th century.
Specifically, this paper focuses on those pieces of news which capture how the Spanish cities are glimpsed in the reports of both media productions in order to appreciate physical and social transformations happened in them.

RESUMEN: La carta de contestación del 2 abril de 1952 que Audibert, directora de Pathé Jounal, dirige a Soriano, director del NO-DO, sirve como punto de partida a esta investigación en la que se analiza el intercambio de fondos documentales entre ambos noticiarios, ya que desde el principio NO-DO busca completar su archivo con las grabaciones cinematográficas previas a la Guerra Civil y a su propia creación por el importante valor histórico de las mismas.
Los noticiarios constituyen un importante medio para analizar cómo se quiere conformar el imaginario colectivo y cómo afecta la política y cultura imperantes a la forma de plasmar los edificios y las ciudades en las pantallas de los cines. Los contenidos estudiados de Pathé y NO-DO son principalmente actos y visitas oficiales, en los que la arquitectura filmada crea la atmósfera y el fondo escenográfico de la acción que se desarrolla. Por ello, y respectivamente, los edificios y espacios urbanos mostrados, tanto para el público extranjero, a través de la actividad de los iconos sociales, como para el propio, a través de la mirada intencionada del Régimen franquista, sirven para dar una cierta imagen de realidad que abarca las diferentes etapas del siglo XX.
En concreto, se estudian aquellas noticias que registran cómo se asoman las ciudades españolas a los reportajes de ambas producciones para apreciar las transformaciones físicas y sociales que se suceden en ellas.

El enigmático prisma, aparecido en la película '2001: A Space Odyssey' fue la versión que Kubrick dio al Centinela de la eternidad, ideado previamente en un relato corto de Arthur C. Clarke, coguionista del film junto con el director. De todas las formas sugeridas en el set de rodaje se eligió esta poderosa geometría, tan contundente como simple, en claro contraste con todos los demás artefactos diseñados para la cinta. La figura cumplió con la expectativa de simular un longevo ingenio extraterrestre, tanto en su disposición erecta, como en las perspectivas flotantes sobre el vacío estelar. Un rectángulo negro sobre fondo negro que emula las estrategias cromático- compositivas del suprematismo: el modelo de la no representación en el que las percepciones se transforman en cuerpos suspendidos en el desierto del lienzo. Se propone así un lenguaje unificado para las artes figurativas que tendrá especial relevancia en la arquitectura de las primeras décadas del siglo XX, ya que el artista es considerado el constructor de un nuevo mundo de objetos, que se originan sin una base de apoyo y, por lo tanto, aspiran a navegar en el espacio cósmico. Superado el ecuador del siglo, el cineasta americano recuperó las cualidades orbitales de aquellos sólidos geométricos al depositar en su anomalía magnética la mitología y el misterio de una milenaria civilización alienígena. Mientras que aquí en la tierra, la disciplina arquitectónica adoptaría este volumen como contenedor doméstico, característico del desarrollismo industrial, al invadir las periferias urbanas con paquetes paralelepipédicos, utilizados como albergues colectivos del anonimato. Figuras apriorísticas que también simbolizaron el poder financiero al representar a las grandes corporaciones comerciales con abstractos rascacielos de cristal. Ambos programas residen en un único tipo de edificio para uno de los grandes arquitectos del novecientos, Mies van der Rohe. Una caja aislada que parece aterrizar sin llegar a tocar el suelo, del que le separan unos cuantos pilares. Una solución canónica, disciplinada por la construcción racional y estándar de un revestimiento homogéneo y oscuro que solidifica este recipiente, recordándonos las cualidades del monolito creado por Kubrick. Este paradigma volumétrico del siglo XX migra de emblema de la arquitectura del proletariado a representante del capitalismo más feroz, pero es gracias al séptimo arte que se catapulta en mito. El texto indaga en las relaciones entre estas propuestas y el mudo protagonista del célebre metraje de ciencia ficción.
